The Academy

Ballet San Antonio Academy, formerly Mayra Worthen Ballet School, was established in 1984. It is home to Ballet San Antonio, San Antonio’s professional ballet company. The affiliation of the school as the official academy of the company was an integral ingredient in the commitment to establish a professional institution. The name change to Ballet San Antonio Academy came with the building of a new state of the art dance studio that the academy shares with the ballet company, uniting the company and the school by name. The Academy offers a professional training program in Ballet and Jazz for those students wanting to pursue a career in dance, as well as a recreational program for those who want to dance for fun or exercise. Ballet San Antonio Academy is also home to a Pre-Professional dance company, Ballet San Antonio Junior Company.

Placement

Class placement will be determined at the time of registration. Students will be evaluated during the first week of classes to assure proper placement. Changes will be made on recommendation of the instructor only.

Promptness

Students should arrive early enough to be prepared to start class on time. Students arriving more than 10 minutes may be asked to observe instead of participate. Parents should pick up children promptly after class.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Written evaluation are completed at the end of each year. Parents are encouraged to make appointments in advance to discuss their child’s progress.

End of Year Demonstration/Performance Opportunities

There will be a theatre demonstration/performance in May of 2005 to highlight the accomplishments of our students.  This performance is free to the public.  Students 7 through 13 years of age, with at least 2 years of ballet training, are encouraged to audition for Ballet San Antonio’s production of The Nutcracker.

Classroom Etiquette

Proper classroom etiquette is essential to the education and training of a ballet dancer.  The following rules are universal and are followed by all major ballet programs and professional companies. Hair is to be pulled back off face and neck in a neat bun. No jewelry (except for small earrings) is to be worn to class or rehearsals. Elastic is to be on shoes. No gum chewing, eating, drinking or smoking is allowed in the studios. Talking, leaning on barre, yawning or leaving class before is over is not acceptable. If a student needs to leave before class is over, he/she must ask to be excused by teacher.  Please do so discretely so as not to disrupt class. Arrive early. If late, wait for the exercise in progress to be over before entering the studio.  Students arriving late may be asked to observe instead of participate. If you are going to be absent call the office so that the teacher can be notified before class begins.  If a make up class is available for your class level, arrangements can be made then. Stay in the back of the room if you do not know the combination. Eyes and attention must always be on teacher. Be appreciative of corrections and apply them.  Students will progress only as fast as they can take corrections. Students should never stop in the middle of an exercise unless and injury is sustained. Do not talk back to teacher regardless of the situation.  It is improper to question the teacher’s authority. If you have a problem talk to the teacher after class. Be kind to your classmates. Displays of temper and rudeness are unacceptable.  Absolutely NO GOSSIP!!!! After class applaud pianist and teacher and thank teacher for class. Keep your things neat in the dressing room and use the trashcan. Because of the sweaty nature of class, please bring a towel to class and use it! Do not wear your ballet shoes outside the studio and wear street clothes over uniform when leaving the studio. Please label shoes and do not bring valuables to the studio!

Enrollment

Ballet San Antonio Academy maintains an open enrollment policy.  Prospective students may enter at any time and may take one class on a trial basis and will not be charged for the class if they decide not to enroll.  Otherwise, the trial class will count as the first class and will be charged accordingly.  Class placement will be recommended at the time of registration and confirmed by the instructor after evaluation in order to determine proper placement.  Changes will be made on recommendation of the instructor only.

The academy’s schedule follows an academic year.  Fees are based on 48 weeks of instruction divided into 4 quarters.  There are 4 weeks a year when the school is closed.  Months with fewer classes due to holidays are offset during the year by months with extra classes.  There are no tuition adjustments for absences or holidays.  Tuition is due in full in December and March.  Students going on vacation may arrange in advance to pay for only the classes to be taken that moth at a per class rate.  Students making any changes in their class schedule must do so before the 5th of the month or they will automatically be re-enrolled in the classes taken the previous month and charged accordingly.

Dress Requirements

Class uniforms are required.  Hair must be pulled back and completely off face and neck.  Students must wear street clothes over their uniforms when leaving the school.  No excessive jewelry should be worn to class.
