Coppelia, the most celebrated ballet comedy of all time, tells a lively and whimsical story of magic, jealously, stubborn love, and mistaken identity.
In the first act, we meet Coppelia, the daughter of the town’s eccentric and absent-minded toymaker, Dr. Coppelius. Coppelia is first sighted by a lovely, clever girl named Swanhilda who immediately offers greetings and is ignored. Swanhilda attempts to ignore this rude behavior, but her temper is inflamed when she sees her fiancé, Franz, blowing kisses to Coppelia. Swanhilda and Franz spend the first act exchanging jealousy, hurt, tests, and stubborn affection for each other. Their troubles are accentuated by the Burgomaster’s announcement that bags of gold will be given to every couple to married at the Festival of Bells. Will they receive one of these prizes?
The second act is full of action. Swanhilda and Franz each break into the toymaker’s workshop, but with different results. Swanhilda, a girl of quick wit, discovers that Coppelia is only a doll and turns the situation to her advantage by disguising herself in the doll’s clothes and taking cover before the inventor returns. Moments later, Franz climbs through a balcony into the workshop and is faced with the grumpy inventor whose hard work has been disrupted. Dr. Coppelius tries to trick Franz in an attempt to bring his creation to life. Things seem to start off well, but Dr. Coppelius is in for a surprise when “Coppelia” is not the girl he expects her to be in real life. The delightful ballet ends at the Festival of Bells with the wedding of Swanhilda and Franz. Dr. Coppelius, embarrassed and baffled, is offered Swanhilda’s apologies and the gift of a bag of gold from the town.
We invite you to participate in the ups and downs of this lively and lovely ballet with us this March.
